Yesterday an attempted armed robbery took place in Parow Valley in the Northern Suburbs after seven men driving two separate vehicles tried to rob a Fidelity cash van fatally wounding a security guard.

Police spokesperson Siphokazi Mawisa says the suspects fired several shots at the cash van wounding the other security guards.

“On further investigation police spotted two vehicles at Florida Park in Ravensmead and arrested seven suspects aged between 25 and 36 years old.

According to eye witness Keith van Wyk a resident of Ravensmead one of the suspects fled into Ravensmead Welfare society where he hid in the refrigerator and another suspect held an employee of the society hostage.

“It was scary, because the suspects ran in my road and police were giving chase with rifles, many shots were fired,” says Van Wyk.

“Police also confiscated four unlicensed firearms, an AK47 rifle, a R5 rifle, a 9mm pistol and a 38-special revolver, “says Mawisa.

The suspects will appear in the Parow Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday the 5th of December facing charges of murder, attempted murder, and attempted armed robbery.
