The Police Ministry said on Tuesday it will oppose the Western Cape Community Safety Bill if it is passed.

The proposed legislation will grant the province power to monitor the police and set up an ombudsman to investigate service delivery complaints.

Western Cape Premier Helen Zille said police's response to violent crimes and gang violence has been inadequate in some instances.

There will be public hearings on the contentious piece of legislation early next year.

It aims at giving provincial government power to monitor the police.

Police Minister Nathi Mthethwa’s  spokesperson Zweli Mnisi said the Minister of police and the commission of inquiry into Khayelitsha  will be head tommorrow so as the Ministry they would like to prehend or have any parrrarell process outside the court.

He adds that with that they want to respect the court process and then allow the law to take its course.
