Blame put on Provincial Government for the shack fires

On new years day over 4,000 people were left homesless after shack fires swept through informal Settlements in Thembeni, Du noon and BM section in Khayelitsha.

About 800 shacks burnt down in Khayelitsha leaving three people dead and several others seriously injured.

Firefighters battled the blazes for hours in windy conditions.

Abahlali Basemjondolo in the province say this is unacceptable that people are still living in shacks and it is inhuman.

Abahlali Basemjondolo provincial Spokesperson Thembelani Maqwazima said the provincial governemnt does not care about the people in this province.

“As citizens of this country, we have a right to decent housing, to efficient sanitation, to affordable electricity and to well-planned roads, Yet even though residents of BM section as well as numerous settlements affiliated to Abahlali baseMjondolo have been protesting for these things for years, the government has delivered almost nothing we have demanded for in our communities” said Maqwazima.

The ANC in the Western Cape visited the victims on Tuesday and called on other organisation offer assistance.
