President Jacob Zuma today congratulated the matrics who passed, and urged those who failed not to give up hope.
Zuma said the improvement in the national pass rate from 70.2 percent in 2011 to 73.9 percent was "outstanding".
Zuma said that those who did not attain a pass to study at university should enrol at a further education and training college.
Presidency Spokesperson Mac Maharaj said the decision to separate the Basic Education department from the Higher Education Department has brought a significant improvement in the department of education.
Maharaj adds that the Presidency is happy with the results but there is still a lot that needs to be done.
