The Western Cape's top schools and pupils were honoured at the National Senior Certificate Awards today.

Schools were awarded for, among others, success in academic performance in various subjects and an increase in pupils achieving their certificates.

Western Cape Education MEC Donald Grant applauded pupils and schools for a remarkable achievement.

According to reports Grant said an additional 4,000 learners wrote the National Certificate in 2012.

Grant believes the biggest achievement is the increase in the number of poor schools which have achieved bachelor’s degrees.

Grant also said the number increased by 76 percent since 2009.
