The Women’s League Centre says that it is greatly concerned that no women were nominated to be justices in the Constitutional Court by the Judicial Service Commission.

None of the five short listed candidates for the Court vacancy was a woman.

Director of the WLC Jennifer Williams said that the country is made up of 51.3 % of the population being female; having only two female justices in the highest court on constitutional matters is inexcusable.

Williams said that the constitution requires that the judiciary reflect the population of South Africa.

We are very disappointed with this, and we believe that the lack of women judges is symptomatic of the underlying equality of women in the country” Williams added.
