The Western Cape Serious Violent Crime Detectives arrested a 28-year-old suspect who is allegedly involved in the attacks of Intercape buses.
The suspect was
arrested in Klapmuts in the Cape Winelands during a tracing operation in the early
hours of Saturday morning and is charged with murder and attempted murder.
He is also linked to
the murder of 35-year old Intercape bus driver, Bangikhaya Machana who
was shot in April 2022 and died three days later in the hospital. Another
attack happened during March where another Intercape bus was attacked.
Meanwhile, the Western Cape`s Mobility MEC, Daylin
Mitchell welcomed the arrest of the 28-year-old suspect and praised the work done
by SAPS.
“I am grateful for this breakthrough and progress made by
SAPS in the investigation. The Western Cape Government has adopted a whole
society approach to support South African Police Services and law enforcement
in whichever way possible to bring perpetrators of crimes to book. We will
track this case in court and continue to follow up with SAPS until there’s a successful
conviction,” he said.
The Western Cape Police says it will continue to increase
its deployments in order to stop the attacks on Intercape buses.
