Scorpions boss Gerrie Nel can be investigated for fraud and corruption allegations only if a criminal complaint has been made according to the Institute for Security Studies

“If there is no substance, the matter must be dropped,” says the institute's senior researcher, Jake Moloi. Richard Mdluli, Gauteng's deputy police commissioner, was conducting the probe, which included two charges brought by Nel's own investigators according to reports.

The evidence against him reportedly includes his censure by a magistrate, who found that he had displayed partisanship to a colleague who was accused and later convicted of sabotaging a fraud and corruption investigation.

Nel led the investigation into the state's aborted probe into alleged criminal activity by National Police Commissioner Jackie Selebi and the shooting of mining magnate Brett Kebble.

Mokotedi Mpshe Acting Public Prosecutions national director is reported to have held a high level meeting in Cape Town on Thursday when Nel's case was discussed.
