Two people died in shack fires

About 800 people were left homeless after a fire destroyed shacks at the BM section in Khayelitsha this morning.

Firefighters battled for hours trying to extinguish the fire,which was being fuelled by wind.

Fire and Rescue Service Spokesperson Theo Layne said two people lost their lives and several others were injured.

The cause of the fire is not known.

Layne adds that firefighters will remain on the scene to monitor the situation.
