An accident earlier this morning left one person dead and thirteen injured. This is after a taxi rear-ended a large bus on the N1 near the Mariasburg off-ramp.

The exact details to the cause of the accident will remain the subject of a police investigation.

ER24 Spokesperson Russel Meiring said ER24 paramedics, along with other services, arrived on scene and found a large bus parked in the emergency lane of the highway. A wrecked taxi lay between the centre mediums splitting the highways.

Meiring said on assessment, paramedics discovered the lifeless body of a woman in her 30s lying a few metres away from the taxi. Unfortunately she had already succumbed to her severe injuries.

Meiring said 12 other patients were found scattered around the taxi while another man was found trapped within the taxi. Three patients were found to be in a critical condition while the remaining patients were found to have sustained injuries ranging from minor to moderate.

Meiring said Rescue services had to use the jaws-of-life and cut away the roof of the taxi to free the trapped man.

“Local authorities were on scene for further investigations” Meiring added.
