An accident this morning which involved a large truck and a light motor vehicle left one person dead at the Snake and Tom Jones Road intersection in Benoni.

The exact details to the cause of the accident will remain the subject of a police investigation.

ER24 Spokesperson Russel Meiring said Paramedics from the ER24 Johannesburg East branch arrived on scene and found the crumpled motor vehicle in the centre isle of the road.

Meiring said the entire right side of the vehicle had been crushed from where the truck had collided with it.

Meiring said on assessment, paramedics discovered a 28-year-old-man trapped in the driver’s seat in a critical condition.

Meiring said Paramedics immediately began their advanced life support treatment while rescue services used the jaws-of-life to free the man from the vehicle. Unfortunately, shortly after treatment began, the patient’s condition deteriorated. Nothing more could be done for the patient and he was declared dead shortly after.

Meiring said the driver of the truck fortunately did not sustain any injuries.

"The cause of the collision is not yet known but local authorities were on scene for further investigations" Meiring added.
