Residents urged to be fire smart

The City of Cape Town reported over 4,000 home fires in the 2023 and 2024 year, leading to more than 200 deaths. Fires in informal settlements increased by 15%, while formal home fires went up 27%.

The city says these rising fire numbers show a need to better educate residents about fire risks and safety. Most fires were caused by negligence and alcohol use.

Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security, JP Smith, urged people to avoid anything flammable when drinking. He said the city has worked to have a good fire department, but home fire safety requires everyone to take steps.

Smith stated that fire safety could be the difference between life and death. He pleaded with residents to find ways to improve fire safety in their homes
