A 38-year-old police sergeant from Riebeeck West is expected to appear in the Malmesbury Magistrate’s Court on Monday for allegedly beating his relatives. He was arrested shortly after the incident on Friday.
‘’The arrest relates to an incident where the suspect is alleged to have assaulted relatives in Deon Adams Avenue, Riebeek West on Friday. Internal SAPS disciplinary action has since been instituted. The management of the SAPS in the Western Cape reiterates its commitment to deal with instances of gender-based violence in all its forms irrespective of who the perpetrator is,’’ said Brigadier Novela Potelwa.
Western Cape Police Commissioner, Lt. General Thembisile
Patekile, says police officials have to lead by example in this regard because
crimes against women, children and other vulnerable groups continue to be a
priority within the SAPS.
“It is disconcerting that the protectors of society are on
the wrong side of the law at a time when our efforts to curb gender-based
violence and femicide should be heightened,” says Lt General Patekile.
The officer faces charges of assault with intent to do
grievous bodily harm and domestic violence.
