The Western Cape Education Department has launched a call for an expression of interest for a proposed Retired Teachers Association.
“It will be a voluntary association which was initiated by the MEC Cameron Dugmore. The ultimate success of the operation will depend on whether there’s interest from teachers,” says Spokesperson for Education, Gert Witbooi.
Witbooi added that the aim of the association is part of building social capital.
“It’s a pool of skills, intellectual skills and experiences that we would like to offer our schools. It’s not meant to replace our teachers but to provide support,” says Witbooi.
Project co-ordinator of the association, Andiswa Mxhadi says that the project will be launched next year at the end of February.
“Members of the association will interact with other retired teachers in participating in community services and also will update relevant legislative issues,” says Mxhadi.
Mxhadi urges all retired Educators in the province to join and assist in the project.
