To ease the backlog of drivers wanting to make licence appointments, the Somerset West driving licence testing centre was opened yesterday morning.
According to City of Cape Town traffic services, the centre has only one electronic booking system point and cannot accommodate more than 60 applications per day.
Despite being informed thereof, more than 100 applicants queued from 03:00 am.
“Given the capacity constraints of the Centre there is no point in joining the queue if it already contains sixty people and, rather than face disappointment, it would be better to try again at a later date,” says Cape Town traffic services spokesperson, Inez Lackay.
The City said that the Somerset West centre can only cater for driving licence tests for light motor vehicles and motorcycles and that people who wanted to make appointments for heavy duty licences will have to go elsewhere.
