A child was drowned and died after being fallen off a ledge at the roadway bridge into Sandvlei in Muizenberg yesterday afternoon.
Six year old boy from Capricorn Village is allegedly been washed off the ledge by a wave.
It is believed that the child was with his father and some friends when the incident occurred.
NSRI rescue swimmers from Strandfontein, Simonstown, Kommetjie, Law Enforcement, SA Police Services, Cape Town Fire and Rescue Services, Metro Ambulance and Rescue Services, Life care paramedics, the Metro Red Cross AMS helicopter and Disaster Management were on the scene to save the little child’s life.
"On arrival on the scene, NSRI Strandfontein rescue swimmers and Law Enforcement rescue swimmers searched in waist deep water for him,” said NSRI spokesperson Craig Lambinon.
"During the search the child was located and recovered from the water by NSRI rescue swimmer Bradley Pietersen and the child was brought onto the shore in a breathless and pulse less state,” confirmed Lambinon.
Lambinon says all efforts to save the child were exhausted the child was declared dead on the scene.
The family of the child was taken to SA Police Services trauma counselors for trauma counseling.
Police have opened an inquest docket into the death of the child.
