Twenty-five crewmembers of a Turkish coal carrier have been airlifted to safety after their ship ran aground off Blouberg on the Cape West Coast near Cape Town.
The drama began in extremely rough weather conditions late last night.
NSRI spokesperson Craig Lambinon says it was a difficult operation to get the crew to safety as the wind made flying impossible at times.
“All twenty five crew members were brought safely off the vessel and no one was injured, however, one member was treated for mild hyperthermia but required no further assistance and all are under the hands of customs officials,” said Lambinon.
A full assessment of the stranding will be made today.
Meanwhile, the Weather Office says the stormy weather being experienced in the Western Cape is expected to continue for at least the next two days.
