Former cleric and struggle politician Allan Boesak has resigned from the Congress of the People and the Western Cape provincial legislature with immediate effect.
Boesak says in a statement Cope in the Western Cape continues to be in disarray and is characterised by faction fighting, strife, pitched battles for political supremacy and duplicity.
Earlier the party’s Youth Movement in the province called on Boesak to account for alleged disciplinary infringements or resign.
Cope’s national spokesperson as well as COPE MP Phillip Dexter, confirmed Boesak’s resignation and said they met it with regret.
“The Congress of the People received the resignation letter of Dr. Allan Boesak from the party and the Western Cape Legislature with regret,” Dexter said.
Dexter said they do not agree with Boesak's reasons for resigning, but COPE is a voluntary organisation and South Africans are free to join it or not as they choose.
“We wish Dr. Boesak all the best in his future endeavours,” Dexter added.
Boesak said he is not prepared to put his family through the tension of being associated with the party any longer.
