An unidentified object seen flying over Witsand in the Southern Cape had people running for their cell phones yesterday.
The object, which was seen landing in the sea, caused the NSRI at the town to be contacted.
NSRI spokesperson Craig Lambinon says they found a helium filled balloon the size of a kombi with the wording "MKem 24th Birthday" washed up on the beach.
“The MKem pharmacy in Bellville was contacted and they confirmed that it was a helium balloon celebrating their birthday,” he said.
The balloon was left flying above the pharmacy at around 2pm they received a call from the member of the public saying the balloon is flying over the N1 in Bellville.
Lambinon added that the balloon travelled about 300km for two hours and landed in Witsand beach.
