South Africa received a record nine-and-a-half-million tourists last year. This is five-and-a-half-percent more than the previous year.
Tourism Minister Marthinus van Schalkwyk told a tourism trade conference that spending by the visitors jumped more than 23-percent last year, to 74-point-two-billion-Rands.
But he warned that the global economic crisis was hurting tourism this year.
Media reports quotes Van Schalkwyk as saying the ministry expected the 2010 Soccer World Cup could reverse the trend and restore tourism's shine.
