Members of Parliament from the portfolio committee on Public enterprises demaded clarity from Eskom yesterday on the tariff hikes some of its big industrial customers will be subjected to.

Officials from the power utility were grilled on what they are doing to get out of long-term contracts with customers who have been supplied with power at a significantly reduced rate for decades.

Eskom mentioned to the MPs confidential re-negotiations were underway.

However the parliamentarians are getting increasingly hot under the collar over Eskom’s long-term agreements with some of its biggest customers.

The agreements ensure that, among others, aluminum mining houses buy electricity at a fraction of the cost paid by ordinary South Africans.

An official from the sate-owned entity Brian Dames pleaded for patience from the them to allow time to renegotiate the contracts.

Committee chairperson Vytjie Mentor has given Dames and his team an ultimatum.
