A man has been arrested for offering a member of metro police a R20 bribe.
Metro Police Deputy Chief Yolanda Faro says their members were busy with a vehicle check point in the vicinity of Potsdam and Blaauwberg Road when a pedestrian who was passing by started to swear at them.
“The officers noticed that he was intoxicated and arrested him for drunk in public. This followed after numerous warnings and requests for him to stop using abusive language. He was later also charged with bribing a police officer when he tried to bribe the arresting officer with a R20.
“Apart from the isolated incident, the metro officers issued 132 traffic fines with a monetary value of R59 000. There were also strict by-law enforcement, and 14 by-law offences were recorded during routine patrols,” said Faro.
Faro added that this is the second time in two weeks that their members had to endure abusive behaviour from the public and they will not tolerate such actions. We will respond by applying the long arm of the law.
