A 29 year old suspect was arrested for the possession of illegal firearms and ammunition yesterday in Khayelitsha.
Inspector November Filander said police were conducting routine patrols when they spotted a suspicious looking vehicle in Site C.
As they pursued the vehicle, police noticed an occupant throwing a firearm out of the car.
“When the vehicle stopped, three of the occupants got out and disappeared between the nearby houses,” said Filander.
One of the three suspects, from Delft, was arrested after he was found in possession of a pistol with ammunition.
Police also recovered the handgun that was thrown out of the suspects’ vehicle.
“This firearm was reported stolen in Sharpville, Gauteng during December 2004,” said Filander.
The suspect will appear in the Khayelitsha Magistrate’s Court on Thursday.
The search for the other suspects is ongoing.
“Detectives will also investigate whether the suspect or the firearms can be linked to the fatal shooting of 37 year old, Constable Mtunzi Fipaza of Lansdowne last week in Khayelitsha,” added Filander.
Anyone with information on the incident is asked to contact Crime Stop on 08600 10 100.
