Mpumalanga police have confirmed that a policeman and a civilian died in a shootout at a police station in Middelburg last night.
The civilian who was shot dead was a 29-year-old man arrested for robbery.
He apparently grabbed 33-year-old Sergeant Hennie Steyn’s service revolver and shot him in the chest.
Other policemen on the scene opened fire and the suspect was killed.
Steyn died while being treated at a hospital across the road from the police station.
