The Freedom Front Plus has strongly condemned President Jacob Zuma’s comment that South African prisons are full of black people as they have not been given enough opportunities.
FF Plus parliamentary leader Pieter Groenewald says this kind of talk encourages crime.
He says Zuma is missing the point.
Meanwhile, Correctional Services and Johannesburg’s Helen Joseph Hospital have agreed to let parolees and probationers complete part of their sentences by assisting at the hospital.
The department says this will form part of their rehabilitation process. It will also help ease overcrowding in prisons.
They will help is areas like administration and gardening.
Correctional Services’ Gladys Nthangeni says the country has about 45 000 people on parole and 22 000 on probation.
