A fire in the STT informal settlement in Khayelitsha destroyed 37 shacks and left 150 people displaced.

The City’s Fire and Rescue Services responded hurriedly to the scene attending the blaze.

The City’s Solid Waste Management Department has been activated to clear the affected site.

Disaster and Risk Management Centre spokesperson Wilfred Solomons-Johannes has said that they have assisted the victims with food parcels, blankets, clothes, building material and baby supplies.

"It is believed that the fire was started at an unoccupied shack; it is suspected that the blaze was a result of a cooking device left unattended, or an open flame that was not extinguished" Solomons-Johannes said.
