The City of Cape Town today said motorists who have had their cell phones confiscated by police but have not reclaimed them are being checked for possible insurance fraud.

Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security JP Smith said 600 cell phones have been confiscated from motorists since last year.

The bylaw was passed in 2012 in the Western Cape.

Smith said the police and the insurance companies have been informed about the cell phones that have not been reclaimed.

He added that the City wants to ensure that there is no fraud taking place.
