An investigation is underway into helicopter crash which left Hendrick Marias dead.

It has been reported that Marias was water bombing a flare up fire at Cape Point when he had to crash land which resulted in his death.

The fire in the South Peninsula which started last week Sunday resulted in about five-hundred people being evacuated from their homes, eight structures destroyed and over five-thousand hectares of vegetation destroyed.

SANParks Board Chairperson Kuseni Dlamini said Marias played a vital role in supressing the fire throughout last week.

SANParks Spokesperson Paul Daphne said Mr Dlamini is on record as saying that Mr Marias has made the ultimate sacrifice in protecting life and property, during the fires that have been raging across the Table Mountain National Park, including the Cape Point section in which the accident took place.
