Thousands of Cape Town train commuters were late for work this morning after vandals damaged several trains and the central railway line from Khayelitsha and Mitchell’s Plain. Some train services were cancelled and others were delayed. Metrorail says it believes striking Satawu security guards are responsible for the destruction. Seven trains were damaged yesterday afternoon and concrete sleepers and tree trunks were placed on the railway line, endangering the safety of commuters. The vandalism is being investigated.
In Gauteng, train commuters were also left stranded due to power failures which affected a number of lines. This includes train services between Pretoria and Johannesburg. Similar problems were experienced in Tembisa, as well as between Pretoria and Germiston. Metrorail says the power failures are being probed.
