Eight people have been arrested due to an ongoing investigation into abalone poaching which led police to an operation which took place early this morning near to Robben Island.
“When police members tried to approach them with two boats, the suspects tried to flee after which the skipper attempted to overturn one of the police boats by driving into it.” said SAPS spokesperson Inspector Bernadine Steyn
In an attempt to stop the boat, rubber bullets were fired. When the boat refused to stop, shots were fired at the engine after which the boat came to a halt, said Steyn
“Diving equipment was found on the boat. The suspects were arrested for contravening the Marine Living Resources Act. The 51 years old skipper of the boat was also arrested for Attempted Murder. They are expected to appear in the Cape Town Magistrate’s court soon.” said Steyn
