The Police and Prisons Civil Rights Union (POPCRU) has issued a statement, thanking police members for performing the dangerous, yet important work that they do. This comes after numerous reports of police shootings around the province.
Last week in Bothasig, a reservist and constable were shot at by criminals. Police spokesperson Andre Traut says that they are reportedly still recovering in hospital.
“Police officers have always been a target of criminals, because they would like to escape an arrest. That’s why police officers are attacked in the line of duty,” said Traut.
POPCRU spokesperson Benzi Ka-soko agrees with Traut and added that the union is angered that police officers still continue to be the target of the bullets of criminals. “It shows that police officers are under siege in this country,” said Ka-soko.
“Police officers cannot continue to die with their weapons. Their weapons should be used when the need arises,” he said.
