A fire has broken out in a student’s room in Woolsack Residence at the University of Cape Town this afternoon.
Four rooms were devastated and another eight were damaged by smoke and water. Raymond Hartley from Communication and Marketing Department University of Cape Town said most students were attending classes and those in the building were successfully evacuated.
No lives were endangered during the emergency and the university’s fire department succeeded in bringing the fire under control in a short time.
Hartley said that Campus emergency officials will work with police to determine the exact cause of the fire.
The university’s insurers will also examine the extent of the damage caused.
The university is currently working to secure temporary accommodation for the 14 affected students either in other residences on the campus or off-campus
