Fires still ravaging Somerset west

Cape Town Fire Services say about 25 fire vehicles and more than 200 fire fighters are still out in the Somerset West area where several fires continue to rage.

None of the fires are burning out of control but the fire service has warned that high temperatures and strong winds could pick up later today.

The blazes fanned by strong winds have been threatening the wine estates of Vergelegen and Lourensford as well as the Horseshoe Bend area on the N2 close to Sir Lowry’s Pass.

Liesel Moody from Cape Town fire and Control Centre said the Horseshoe Band has a helicopter present to monitor the fire as well as two jets.

“That is the area that is the problem at the moment, it is a very vast area”
