Parliament elects Zuma as president

The National Assembly convened at 2pm today to elect the president of the country with Chief Justice Pius Langa presiding.

Winnie Madikizela-Mandela of the African National Congress, nominated Jacob Zuma as its candidate while the Congress of the People put forward Dr Mvume Hamilton Dandala which forced a secret ballot to be held.

Jacob Zuma received 277 votes and 47 for Dandala. The ruling party holds 264 of the 400 seats allocated in the National Assembly.

He is now the 4th democratically elected president of South Africa in 15 years.
