A case of assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm and theft of a firearm has been opened. The case was opened after an off duty policeman was assaulted by angry residents in Khayelitsha on the weekend.
Police were monitoring a service delivery protest by angry residents in Site C in Khayelitsha. The constable was making his way through the protesting crowds who pulled him out of his car.
“Tempers flared when the off-duty officer, driving a Fiat Cento, tried to drive through part of the barricade. He lost control of the car and crashed into the pavement.
“The constable is stationed in Stellenbosch, was off duty and he was not wearing any uniform when he was attacked by the resident,” said police spokesperson Annika van der Vyfer.
The policemen is said to be in a stable condition in hospital. Police are urging anyone who might have any information on the attack of the officer to contact Chistor Swart on 082 8509791 or during office hours on 021 3602397. No arrests have been made.
