An alleged serial rapist was arrested on Friday after he escaped from custody earlier this week in Soweto, Johannesburg police said.

Warrant Officer Kay Makhubela said the 26-year-old man from Zola had appeared in the Protea Magistrate's Court on Monday for the rape of four women.

"It was not clear how he escaped, but we are investigating. Our informers traced him and he was arrested in Dobsonville," said Makhubela.

This was the second time that he escaped from custody.

He will appear in the same court on Tuesday on a charge of escaping from lawful custody.
