A fire kills eighteen elderly people

In Johannesburg eighteen people were killed and several others injured when a fire broke out at the Pieter Wessels home for the aged on the East Rand.

Netcare 911 spokesperson Chris Botha was stated as saying “A fire at the Pieter Wessels old age home in Nigel broke out at around 21.00 on Sunday and left 18 people dead and 84 were rescued”.

After the firemen extinguished the blaze, the building was searched and seventy bodies of the elderly residents dead in the fire.

Another person died of a heart attack later on.

It has been reported that this is one of the worst disaster rescue personnel’s have had to handle.

One of the patients suffered 40 percent burns to his body and was airlifted to hospitals and two more patients suffered serious injuries.

Other victims who survived the fire were taken to churches and other homes for the aged. The cause of the fire is still not known
