Police tightens hold on drug dealers and drunk drivers

City’s Metro Police,Traffic officers as well as the members of the South African Police Services held roadblocks and executed search warrants during a joint operation between the various services. 27 suspects were arrested and 277 traffic fines were issued.

Twenty motorists were arrested for drunk driving and 76 traffic fines issued during a roadblock that was held on Prince George Drive. Another three motorists were arrested in Modderdam Road, Bishop Lavis, for the same offence and 135 traffic fines issued.

In Klipfontein Road, Athlone the focus was on road traffic safety awareness where the officers conducted a roadblock as well as speed enforcement. Thirty six traffic fines were recorded.

“The Metro Police is adopting a zero tolerance approach through our stabilising strategy as we work towards our festive season readiness,” Metro Police Chief, Rob Young said.

The focus also shifted to the execution of search warrants in areas such as Athlone, Bloemkombos and Hanover Park, whilst the roadblocks was in process.

A Z88 firearm with magazine was found and confiscated at a house in Bloemkombos, Kraaifontein, when the metro officers and members of the South African Police Services conducted a joint operation in the area. Two suspects were arrested for the possession of an illegal and possible stolen firearm.

Two women were arrested in separate raids. In Athlone a woman in her early fifties was arrested for possession of narcotics when a packet of TIK, ½ Mandrax tablet and Dagga were found in her possession.

In Hanover Park, another woman was arrested when the metro officers found and confiscated 19 units of heroin that were found in her possession.

Five Mandrax tablets were found abandoned at a flat in Kewtown earlier in the evening and no arrests were made.
