The Fisheries Department has strongly denied allegations that it is on the brink of collapse.
This follows earlier newspaper reports based on information given by one of the department’s employees, Shaheen Moola.
Meanwhile, thousands of workers affiliated to the Food and Allied Workers Union in the fishing sector embarked on a strike along the West Coast earlier today.
The workers are calling for an allowance of 40-percent of seasonal workers’ normal weekly wages.
Negotiations with the CCMA have failed to produce a positive outcome on the matter.
Fawu spokesperson, Dominic Swarts says the strike action will continue if their demands are not met.
