President Jacob Zuma has paid a special tribute to Albertina Sisulu, who passed on last night at her house in Johannesburg.

Zuma hails Mama Sisulu as “one of the foremost mothers of the nation and the last of the colossuses of the struggle for the liberation of South Africa”.

He says she nurtured, counseled, nursed and educated most of the founders of the democratic South Africa.

In conveying his condolences, Zuma also remembers the decades of banishment, detention, humiliation and ultimately exile, the Sisulu’s suffered.

Meanwhile, the United States’ ambassador to South Africa Donald Gips, has added his words of appreciation and sadness.

Gips says Albertina Sisulu was the embodiment of the clarion call Wathinta Abafazi, wathinti i'mbokodo - strike women, and you strike a rock.

The Presidency has announced that Ma Sisulu will be given a national special official funeral.
