Women defend foreign shop owners

Two foreign shop owners were viciously attacked in Botshabelo near Bloemfontein yesterday.

Free State police say the robbers came in through the roof of the tuck shop where the two men were sleeping, poured paraffin on them and set them alight.

The group took an undisclosed amount of money and groceries.

One of the men was able to contact a friend who called the police.

Both were taken to Pelonomi Hospital in Bloemfontein.

In the Ramaphosa informal settlement east of Johannesburg, women have stood up to spaza shop owners who tried to order their foreign competitors out of the area.

The local shopkeepers, members of the Greater Gauteng Business Forum, had driven around the settlement urging residents to join them in taking action against Somali and Pakistani businessmen.

Despite a High Court order prohibiting the intimidation of foreign nationals, Forum members chased away one Somali man and forced another to close his store.

But a large group of women demanded that the foreigners be left alone, saying they provided jobs and cheaper prices.
