Nursing union Denosa in the Eastern Cape says it has “cautiously” noted the Human Rights Watch report on maternal health.
The report reveals how pregnant women in the province often have to buy nurses gifts, including fried chicken lunches, to ensure medical attention.
Women told researchers of the physical and verbal abuse they suffered during labour.
Others say their cries for help were often ignored for hours. Denosa says it does not condone any ill-treatment of patients by healthcare workers.
The Eastern Cape had the highest increase in maternal deaths between 2001 and 2007.
