Two North West police members are recovering in hospital after the occupants of two cars parked on the side of the road opened fire on them outside Rustenburg.
The police were on their way to Photsaneng, responding to a case of house-breaking.
The woman officer was hit on the chin, mouth and forehead, while her male colleague has a knee wound.
Police found 16 spent rifle cartridges at the scene after the attackers sped off.
