It remains unclear exactly how government’s new National Health Insurance scheme will be funded.
It is estimated that the programme will require R125 billion to run next year.
Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan yesterday gave the assurance that South African taxpayers won’t have to foot the bill.
But Health Minister Aaron Motsoaledi says everyone who earns above a certain income will be required by law, with no exceptions, to contribute towards the scheme.
The NHI aims to give all South Africans access to essential health care.
