Chief justice nominee Mogoeng Mogoeng is being grilled by the Judicial Service Commission in Cape Town today on his fitness to hold office.

Mogoeng, the only candidate nominated for the post by President Jacob Zuma, is fighting off accusations that he is homophobic, gender-insensitive and too inexperienced for the job.

He has released a 38-page written reply to claims about his reputation in which he says he took an oath as a judge to uphold and protect the constitution and the human rights entrenched in it.
