City of Cape Town Mayor Patricia de Lille has announced plans for a new policy regarding street musicians.

This follows the forceful removal by three metro police officers of 51-year-old blind busker Lunga Goodman Nono last month at St Georges Mall.

De Lille said there needs to be an environment that is appropriate and enabling for street musicians in the city.

Mayoral Spokesperson Solly Malatsi explains that on Wednesday before council the Mayor submitted a request to repeal the policy for street musicians that dates back to 1993.

“She’s also requested that an economic and environmental special planning portfolio consider possible revisions regarding busking to our upcoming informal trading by law,” added Malatsi.
