The South African Chamber of Commerce and Industry has expressed its concern with regards to the proposed amendment to the Employment Equity Act to penalise firms on company turnover.

SACCI’s Neren Rau said this entrenches a dangerous regulatory precedent as it will ultimately hamper job creation.

Rau added that the amendment will in fact set transformation back and undermine job creation.  He further added that it is possible that businesses will take some time to reach some point of compliance.

Neren Rau said skills development is a pipeline issue, the extent to which business can play a role in transforming the economy depends crucially on the quantity and quality of public education.
