Greenpeace on Wednesday said the 2013 national budget failed to address issues of cheaper electricity and access to clean energy.

Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan delivered the budget speech in Parliament on Wednesday.

Greenpeace said with the possibility of severe rise in the cost of electricity looming over South Africans, the budget speech failed to address this.

The Alternative Information Development Centre says this budget takes one step forward, only to take two steps backwards.

It is delivered in a deepening economic and social crisis.

AIDC Economist Dick Forslund said in our country, this is highlighted by desperate struggles for basic needs.

Forslund added that we have seen this in Marikana and the mineworkers’ and farmworkers’ continued struggle for a living wage.

Opposition Parties have welcomed the 2013 budget that was delivered by Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan on Wednesday.
