The National Sea Rescue Institute on Wednesday responded to a man who was experiencing difficulty at Plettenberg Bay.

NSRI Craig Lambinon said on arrival they found the man identified as Dr Horst Molitor from Oudtshoorn was already on beach after being rescued by bystanders.

Four bystanders noticed Dr Horst Molitor in difficulty in the sea and they all swum out to try and help.

Lambinon said as they were trying to help they were caught in a strong rip current, but eventually they all managed to reach the beach safely.

Dr Hotst Molitor and the four bystanders were treated on the scene and transported to hospital but have since been discharged.
