WC government says freedom came at a cost

Lusanda Bill
16 December 2014

The Western Cape government says as we commemorate Reconciliation Day we should mindful that our freedom came at a great cost.

Western Cape Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport said this day is a great historical significance in the country however there needs to be a culture of respect that is created.

Ministerial Spokesperson Siviwe Gwarube said we are still experiencing structural inequality which is one of our biggest challenges as South Africans remain unemployed, they remain unsafe on the streets and corruption is hampering service delivery.

Gwarube said as South Africans become more impatient with the progress we are making we have seen a recent spike in racial tension over the past couple of weeks.

“The Western Cape government condemns in the strongest possible terms any kind of discrimination on the basis of race and violence emanating from racial attacks.
